Nenikékamen (‘We have won’) was the very last word pronounced by the ancient Greek hero Pheidippides before he collapsed and died due to utter exhaustion. The Athenian herald had run 40 kilometres from a battlefield near the town of Marathon to Athens to announce the unexpected victory of the Greek over the invading Persians. Hopefully, come April, I won’t die on the spot when I finish what will be my very first marathon run. That is right, I will attempt to run this fabled distance and you have to help me achieve this whopping objective.
No one becomes an athlete overnight. It’s a long and harsh path and it’s full of obstacles. Actually, when I say “running a marathon” I don’t just mean the simple act of moving swiftly on foot for 42.195 kilometres (or 26 miles and 385 yards, if you prefer) but everything that is necessary to become an active member of the community of people that enjoy the many benefits of running.
Basically, what I will be doing in the following five months is monitoring my training and my personal progress towards the goal that I have set myself. I’ll write a weekly article on hashbrum that will provide you with all the interesting bits about my ambitious adventure. In the article I will include a series of videos, images, graphs, maps and statistics that will help everyone understand the trial I will set from physical apathy to Olympic glory!
Additionally, it is of paramount importance to me to engage as much as possible with the community of runners in Birmingham. This means, I would like you, fellow runners, to communicate with me, to give me some advice, to cheer me up if I hit a low, to mock me if you think I’m a fool, anything, it doesn’t matter if it is via comments on hashbrum, Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, etc.) or meeting face to face and going for a run.
